Set the Scene
The journey to New York Grill requires two separate sets of elevators. The hostess walks you past the large open kitchen before reaching the main dining room. Sitting on the 52nd floor of Park Hyatt Tokyo with 26-feet tall, floor-to-ceiling windows, New York Grill offers one of the best views of the metropolis that is Tokyo. On either end of the room, colorful murals by Valerio Adami depict New York City-inspired scenes. Live jazz performance from the adjacent New York Bar, famous for being the backdrop of the 2003 movie Lost in Translation, can be heard throughout the restaurant.
New York Grill, along with the hotel, was closed for 19 months for a renovation, and it finally reopened in December of 2025. During the redo, the restaurant was restored while retaining its original design and black and white palette. Dark, intimate, and elegant, it’s the kind of place where you’d want to slide into a booth for a special night out.
What’s the Food Like
This is an American steakhouse at its finest, but prepared using mostly Japanese ingredients. Sure, there’s USDA Prime beef, but this is your opportunity to order some Kobe beef from Hyogo or olive-fed beef from Kagawa instead.
A few signature items from the old menu show up, including a Caesar salad with cherrywood smoked bacon and seared Japanese scallops with lemon caper butter. Nothing is overcomplicated, yet well-prepared.
New York Grill is a special occasion meal for Tokyoites (or those with a corporate card), which means this is the place to splurge. You can start the meal with oscietra caviar or accompany your wagyu steak with Canadian lobster or king crab leg. Decision fatigue? Four or five-course prix fixe meals on hand to do the choosing for you.
Let’s Talk about the Drinks
New York Grill’s wine list stays true to its name. The restaurant carries exclusively wines from the United States. The list covers more states than most restaurants in the U.S. with wines not just from California and Oregon, but also Texas and New York. The only exception is a single category:Champagne. Nothing can truly replace this French bubbly, after all.
Guests at the Grill can also order any of the cocktails offered at New York Bar. The bar’s extensive cocktail menu is a journey through the evolution of cocktails, from the 1800s to now, ending with the bar’s own creations.
Final Thoughts
This iconic Tokyo restaurant is all about its timeless look and classic steakhouse menu. Expert preparation of wagyu beef, impeccable service, and unbeatable views made New York Grill a legendary restaurant when it first opened, and this reopening keeps the torch burning.
